The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
