The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
