Boxing is experiencing a notable downturn this year, with few major fights and considerably fewer compelling bouts than normal. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight contest between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena provides some solace to the beleaguered business. The quiet attraction of the two boxers is amplified by the fact that they now stand on the verge of a chance at a world title. Yet each has weaknesses. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, besides three setbacks, he has been knocked down on several occasions by multiple challengers. He invariably recovers but Wardley possesses more power than anyone he has faced – with the exclusion of Wilder who looked a shell of a devastating finisher when Parker swept to a clear unanimous decision in the end of 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had no amateur experience and has perpetually battled skepticism over his skill set. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight division. These two guys have accepted the challenge when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Wardley is similarly well-placed and he could have just waited for his chance. He said ‘I refuse.’ He chose to box – and against Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not thinking about losing. I have respect for my rival and what he has done and the way he's trained for this contest. But I am on a different level and I am intending to prove it on Saturday.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It is a massive night for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my boxing journey and the biggest fight of my life. But each time I rise to the occasion I rise to the occasion. Saturday will be the same. The divide between Parker's level and what others believe about me has been a common theme in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his ledger. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the sport for a long time and had numerous grueling matches. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a far greater number of those than me.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker will be too experienced, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is expected to triumph a hard-fought contest with the confidence that he is the leading contender for the champion Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a comfortable distance.
