Israeli citizens observe two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have come together across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent delegate involved in the talks indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the deal.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict management of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No location feels like home any longer and until every captive are released no one will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of the population want the conflict to end in as payment for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the west side district, area and zone areas and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the night comes, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Medical Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city said another two dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the southern area, health workers stated.
