Disappointing Oracle Earnings Report Erase More Than $70bn From Worth, Stoking Artificial Intelligence Hype Anxiety.

The tech firm's disappointing quarterly results have slashed in excess of $70 billion from the value of the software and data company co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison, adding to growing fears of a speculative bubble in artificial intelligence stocks.

Significant Share Price Fall Comes After Revenue Miss

Shares in the company plunged by 11.5% in after-hours trading after it reported a disappointing 14 percent growth in sales to $16bn in the most recent quarter, while simultaneously disclosed plans to ramp up its artificial intelligence investment by around $fifteen billion dollars.

The business recorded softer-than-forecast three-month sales for the period ending in November, with sales at its key cloud computing business expanding at a more modest rate than anticipated, at 34 percent.

Investor Concerns Over Investment and Debt

Shareholders were also let down by a slower than expected sixty-eight percent growth in income from its cloud infrastructure unit.

At the same time, the market were alarmed by the company's elevated projections for spending on artificial intelligence. It now anticipates capex to leap by 40% to $50 billion, with the lion's share of the additional spending allocated for constructing data centres.

This heavy investment strategy comes amid a growing leverage, with Oracle's long-term debt having increased by 25 percent over the last twelve months to reach $nearly one hundred billion dollars.

"Honestly, the earnings release was not catastrophic, but it served to validate fears around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an uncertain timeframe for profitability," commented a market analyst.

Wider Market Repercussions and Industry Risks

Sustained exuberance about the promise of AI tech has led to a sharp rise in stock prices in the past year, but there has been a rising number of warnings from policymakers and business leaders who say stock market valuations could tumble if investors ended up being disappointed by the progress or commercial uptake of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider creating enterprise solutions for large firms worldwide and has more recently grown rapidly in cloud computing, analysts point to growing concerns about how dependent companies are becoming on circular funding within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle reported that its measure of revenue from customer contracts jumped by 440% over the last twelve months. However, market watchers were skeptical when it emerged that these contracts were driven by large deals from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not placate concerns that the tech sector's AI investments are interdependent, which makes the sector susceptible to a erosion of investor confidence," stated a market strategist.

"Overall, strong backlog increase was not enough to calm fears about AI and the enormous amount of investment spending required by firms to develop AI infrastructure."

Ripple Effect in Tech Shares

Additional AI and tech-related stocks subsequently declined in extended trading following the Oracle announcement. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock fell by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares fell by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares plunged by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
