A large-scale search and recovery effort is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated

Mexico has dispatched naval assets and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine total sailors, per a navy statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple power outages across the country.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are equipped with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative associated with the mission commented.

The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Recent Humanitarian Delivery

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That boat, called "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Wider International Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.

The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of power shortages.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up over the past months, with comments from several officials highlighting the delicate state of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to recent statements, a high-ranking Cuban official insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that initial phases of discussions had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to find the vessels and guarantee the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
